book onlineWhat are dental implants?
Dental implants are prosthetic teeth that attach to the jaw with metal posts implanted into the bone. These posts act as artificial tooth roots to support a prosthetic tooth, or crown, that replaces a tooth lost to decay or trauma.
What are the benefits of dental implants?
Dental implants are designed to feel, look and act just like your natural teeth, so they’re more comfortable than dentures or bridges. Plus, they look like your natural teeth, which helps you feel more confident. There are no messy adhesives, and they can be cared for just like your natural teeth. Plus, because they’re surgically implanted into your jaw bone, they can prevent bone resorption or atrophy that begins to occur once a tooth is lost. Jaw bone atrophy can allow teeth on either side of the gap to become weak, eventually falling out as well. Because they’re not implanted into the jaw bone, dentures and bridges do not prevent atrophy, which means the risk of additional tooth loss is still present.
What are crowns?
Crowns protect damaged or weak teeth and cover large fillings with a durable material designed to hide cosmetic imperfections in addition to providing added stability. Crowns can be tinted to match your natural teeth, and they can be used to repair broken or decayed teeth and to strengthen teeth and hide discoloration following a root canal procedure.
What is a dental bridge?
A bridge is used to replace one or more teeth that have been lost. It’s composed of a metal frame and one or more artificial teeth, and it’s attached to the teeth on either side of the gap left by the missing teeth. Those teeth usually receive crowns to help ensure they’re strong enough to support the added pressure of the bridge. Bridges can be a more comfortable alternative to partial dentures.
